Calls for Submissions
General Information
InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Centre in Toronto accepts submissions of original projects from emerging, mid-career and established artists, curators and collectives on an annual basis. Our mission is to expand the cultural space of technology, and we achieve this through diverse activities in our gallery and production facilities. We are seeking proposals for our 1,000 sq. ft. gallery space at Queen and Ossington in the heart of Toronto's Queen West Gallery district. We support electronic, interactive and new media works which explore this territory in unique critical ways, including connections and cross-over with sculpture, installation, video, site-specific work and performance art.Proposals are reviewed by the Director and Assistant Curator in consultation with the InterAccess Programme Advisory Council (PAC), a group of knowledgeable media artists and curators who meet 4-6 times per year to make programming recommendations and help shape the gallery vision. The PAC looks at artistic vision, diversity, representation and budget when considering a proposal. The PAC also considers how the work can sustain a dialogue with activities and workshops in the InterAccess production studio.
Please note: InterAccess does not accept unsolicited submissions of artwork except during calls for submission periods. As much as we love art, and being introduced to new artists, if you are not responding to a call, we're afraid we can't respond to your work. We're a relatively small centre and this is all we can manage successfully. Thanks for understanding, and please look out for our calls a few times per year.
removed this, seemed redundant. We can not guarantee a response to your work if you submit for the main gallery outside of this time period. Typically, we require roughly six months to review and select submissions for our main gallery.
-->InterAccess enjoys applicants from all walks of life. We encourage artists of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds to apply.

Open Call for Electronic Media Art: InterAccess Emerging Artist Exhibition 2009
This exhibition showcases electronic and new media art works by up-and-coming local and national future stars. We are accepting submissions from post-secondary upper-year students or recent graduates in Ontario and Canada. Curated by our 2009 curatorial intern, this exhibition provides the most competitive emerging artists with professional experience and publicity.
Each year, InterAccess invites a stellar emerging curator to take the reigns and create this important exhibition, which has received rave press from the Toronto Star, The National Post and The Globe and Mail. This year's selected curatorial intern is Jennifer Chan, an interdisciplinary artist and specialist in Visual Culture & Communication at University of Toronto Mississauga/Sheridan College Art & Art History program. She is a recipient of the 2008 Mississauga Arts Awards for Emerging Talent in Visual Arts and was previously a research intern at V tape video resource center. We proudly welcome Jennifer to our team and look forward to her work on this exhibition.
We are looking for submissions of electronic new media work that explores the aesthetics, determinance, (sub)cultures and history of digital media in relation to other creative media such as sculpture, installation, video, site-specific, audio and performance art. Preference may be given towards interactive and/or multimedia work that examines how the personal and political is articulated through digital mediation. Web-based projects are also welcome. However, due to the flexible parameters of an open call, the emerging curator will develop an exhibition related to all the submissions received.
Each selected artist will receive a CARFAC artist fee for participating. Artwork will be exhibited at InterAccess beginning Friday July 10 until Saturday August 8, 2009.
While we welcome proposals from outside of Ontario, please note that InterAccess cannot provide artist travel fees or cover the shipping of artwork. Participating artists will be responsible for timely transportation of their artwork to the gallery a week before the opening on Thursday July 2, 2009. Although the artist is chiefly responsible for installing his/her work, InterAccess will provide technical assistance and basic audio/video equipment.
All submissions must include:
- an artist statement (1 page)
- a project description (1 page)
- a clear description of technical requirements listing:
- materials provided by the artist, including any software and audio-visual equipment
- materials expected from InterAccess, including software and/or hardware
- artistic support material of previous works, and if possible, proposed work (DVD is preferred, however, URL links or JPG images are also accepted)
- a current C.V. (3 pages max)
Final deadline for submissions to be received at InterAccess is Friday April 24, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.

Exhibition Assistance
InterAccess has been announced this year as a Media Arts Recommender for the Ontario Arts Council's Exhibition Assistance Programme. It's a new focus this year for the programme, and three Media Arts specific recommenders have been declared in the province. If you don't know about the programme, it's an excellent way for artists to receive assistance with costs related to presenting their work for an exhibition. Grants are made through third-party recommenders (public art galleries, artist-run centres and arts service organizations) throughout the province. Artists must apply directly to a recommender located in the zone in which they live, or a media-specific recommender. Approved applications are forwarded to OAC by the recommender once the decision to award a grant has been made. This OAC program is open to Ontario-based professional visual artists, craft artists and media artists who have a confirmed, upcoming public exhibition. Primary criteria is artistic excellence.
InterAccess will also prioritize applications which show excellence in the fields of new media, electronic and kinetic art, sound art, computer-driven works, code-based art and other new forms.
More information, program guidelines, and submission forms can be found here.
InterAccess exhibition assistance deadlines: October 27, 2008 and January 26, 2009.

beta is a pilot project that showcases member activity and work and strengthens the connection between the production and exhibition of new media art at InterAccess. beta fosters a sense of community and encourages the growth of our members by providing them a forum for expression and experimentation.
