Calls for Submissions

General Information

InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Centre in Toronto accepts submissions of original projects from emerging, mid-career and established artists, curators and collectives on an annual basis. Our mission is to expand the cultural space of technology, and we achieve this through diverse activities in our gallery and production facilities. We are seeking proposals for our 1,000 sq. ft. gallery space at Queen and Ossington in the heart of Toronto's Queen West Gallery district. We support electronic, interactive and new media works which explore this territory in unique critical ways, including connections and cross-over with sculpture, installation, video, site-specific work and performance art.

Proposals are reviewed by the Director and Assistant Curator in consultation with the InterAccess Programme Advisory Council (PAC), a group of knowledgeable media artists and curators who meet 4-6 times per year to make programming recommendations and help shape the gallery vision. The PAC looks at artistic vision, diversity, representation and budget when considering a proposal. The PAC also considers how the work can sustain a dialogue with activities and workshops in the InterAccess production studio.

Please note: InterAccess does not accept unsolicited submissions of artwork except during calls for submission periods. As much as we love art, and being introduced to new artists, if you are not responding to a call, we're afraid we can't respond to your work. We're a relatively small centre and this is all we can manage successfully. Thanks for understanding, and please look out for our calls a few times per year.

removed this, seemed redundant.

We can not guarantee a response to your work if you submit for the main gallery outside of this time period. Typically, we require roughly six months to review and select submissions for our main gallery.

InterAccess enjoys applicants from all walks of life. We encourage artists of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds to apply.

beta

We are currently accepting proposals for short run, members-driven programming for our continuing beta series.

beta provides InterAccess members an opportunity to exhibit and test work that is new - or even still in development. For anyone who wonders what's going on in the studio, these exhibitions strengthen the connection between the production and exhibition of new media work at InterAccess by showcasing members' studio projects in the gallery.

The beta programme launched in 2007 with beta in Beta, an exhibition of work by Malka Greene, Dave Kemp, Mark Andre Pennock, and Niknaz Tavakolian. Based on the success of that pilot project, InterAccess is making beta a regular part of its exhibition schedule.

Not a current member? Now is the perfect time to join a thriving community of artists who are committed to expanding the cultural space of technology. To become a member of InterAccess, contact Alex Snukal (alex.snukal@interaccess.org) or call 416.599.7206 to check the status of your membership.

Artists exhibiting in beta will be entirely responsible for their own installation and arranging for technical assistance. There are a variety of technical assistance programs offered at InterAccess, and one of these may be what you need.

Call for Gallery Proposals

This year, InterAccess is prioritizing projects which can facilitate ties with the production studio, and artists who can lead workshops in conjunction with their exhibitions. We are selecting works for our 2010 and 2011 programming years. We also encourage artists working with ideas of scale (size, music, the law, lizards?) to submit work for 2010. Before submitting your work, please review our website carefully. It provides a good overview of past artistic content. InterAccess pays artist fees in accordance with CARFAC standards.

This year's deadline: Monday December 1, 2008 by 5:00 p.m.

Proposals are reviewed by the Director/Curator and Assistant Curator in consultation with the InterAccess Programme Advisory Council (PAC), a group of knowledgeable media artists and curators who meet 4-6 times per year to make programming recommendations and help shape the gallery vision. The PAC looks at artistic vision, diversity, representation and budget when considering a proposal. The PAC also considers how the work can sustain a dialogue with activities and workshops in the InterAccess production studio.

Please allow up to six months for the complete review of your proposal.

Please include:

-a detailed project description
-a list of artworks, equipment, materials and other resources to be supplied by the artist
-a list of technical requirements, equipment and materials to be supplied by the gallery

-your CV
-visual or audio support material with detailed descriptions of content. You can submit up to 20 digital jpegs, 1 URL address (please indicate your preferred browser and platform), and a maximum of 2 VHS tapes, CDs or DVDs (NTSC). Please Note: We do not accept slides.
-a detailed list of all support materials
-a self-addressed, sufficiently stamped envelope if you want your work returned.

We thank all applicants for their time and interest in InterAccess, however please understand that our submissions process is highly competitive and only a small percentage of proposals can be accommodated in our yearly schedule which features six main gallery exhibitions. Please also watch throughout the year for other directed calls for proposals, such as our annual emerging artist exhibition and our beta series.

Exhibition Assistance

InterAccess is a Media Arts Recommender for the Ontario Arts Council's Exhibition Assistance Programme. It's a new focus this year for the programme and three Media Arts specific recommenders have been declared in the province. If you don't know about the programme, it's an excellent way for artists to receive assistance with costs related to presenting their work for an exhibition. Grants are made through third-party recommenders (public art galleries, artist-run centres and arts service organizations) throughout the province. Artists must apply directly to a recommender located in the zone in which they live, or a media-specific recommender. Approved applications are forwarded to OAC by the recommender once the decision to award a grant has been made. This OAC program is open to Ontario-based professional visual artists, craft artists and media artists who have a confirmed, upcoming public exhibition. Primary criteria is artistic excellence.

InterAccess will also prioritize applications which show excellence in the fields of new media, electronic and kinetic art, sound art, computer-driven works, code-based art and other new forms.

More information, program guidelines, and submission forms can be found here.

Upcoming InterAccess exhibition assistance deadline: November 16th
