Introduction to Digital Exhibition Development with DETAIL

In-person at InterAccess - Registration to open soon!

This introductory workshop will showcase new tools for creating digital art exhibitions on digital platforms. The MacKenzie Art Gallery’s Digital Exhibitions Toolkit and Art Installation Launcher (DETAIL) is an open-source series of templates, tools, and workflows for creating immersive digital art experiences.

Using a combination of the Gallery’s Digital Exhibition Builder and Unity software, participants in the workshop will create their own digital exhibition to explore and share. Participants will leave the workshop having built their own digital exhibit and maintain continued access to the early-access tools workflows

This workshop is presented in partnership with the MacKenzie Art Gallery.

Workshop Requirements

  • Each person should bring a computer (not a tablet) with a keyboard and mouse to participate.
  • Participants are encouraged to download Unity prior to the workshop (free for personal use)
  • Additional DIY tools and software will be distributed during the workshop and participants will be guided through installation.
  • While not required, participants with basic knowledge of the Unity game engine and/or 3D modelling software will be well equipped to participate in this workshop.

About the Facilitators

Digital artists Cat Bluemke and Jonathan Carroll specialize in game design, expanded reality, and performance. United under their collective persona as SpekWork Studio, they make experiences that span the digital spectrum, from interactive games and comics to immersive reality experiences and live performances. These projects probe technology’s ability to obscure the lines between work and play. They explore technology’s duality as both a labour-saving device and tool of exploitation.

With ten years of exhibition history, they’ve shown internationally with prominent institutions like Rhizome and the New Museum (2020) and the Venice Architecture Biennale (2018) as part of the American Pavillion’s corollary exhibits. Recently, they’ve exhibited with the Singapore Art Museum (2023), Art Gallery of Regina (2023), the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie (2022), InterAcess (2021), and Eyelevel Gallery (2021). With the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Rhizome, and multiple provincial arts councils, the pair has self-published much of their interactive work online, making them freely available to a global audience.

Since 2019, they’ve spearheaded digital programs at the MacKenzie Art Gallery (Regina, Saskatchewan, Treaty 4 Territory), overseeing digital exhibitions and residency programs. They are currently developing the Gallery’s Digital Exhibition Toolkit and Art Installation Launcher (DETAIL) for open-source release in late 2024
