Envisioned as a visual album, Letters in Labyrinth will unfold in a series of animated vignettes, each breathing life into an original musical composition, echoing personal and universal journeys of transformation. Through this evolving landscape, viewers will be carried along a narrative arc—a shared voyage of growth, vulnerability, and self realization through music and dance. Audience members will be invited to anonymously offer their own reflections, weaving their voices into the living fabric of the experience.
This project is presented as part of IA Gateway.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Samuel Wasserman is a DJ, producer, and experimental artist and animator who creates surreal works that analyze and attempt to exaggerate the subtleties and nuances of day-to-day life. These works are often inspired by his own lived experiences and come in various forms from traditional static imagery to animated works, but almost exclusively occupy a place in physical space. Sam also organizes Art Show Near Me, a Toronto-based community platforming spaces for art and underground sound. Sam was born in Toronto, Ontario and spent his childhood and adolescence growing up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Currently, he lives and practices in Toronto and is pursuing a BFA in Experimental Animation at OCAD University.
Kaia Fortis Scott is a filmmaker, animator and multimedia artist from West End Toronto. Through her practice she experiments with themes of connectivity, family, and is particularly fascinated by stories that juxtapose dark and light themes; humour and tragedy, joy and trauma. She has studied at OCAD University and the Film and Television School of the Performing Arts in Czech Republic. With experience on set in many roles as well as pre and post production, Kaia has most recently been working at a kids music and animation studio as a production manager.
After meeting at OCADU and bonding over their shared interests in music and experimental imagery, Sam and Kaia decided to join forces on a project collaborate and bring this hybrid audio-visual project to life.
ABOUT IA GATEWAY
The InterAccess Gateway (IA Gateway) program facilitates low-barrier, no-cost access to gallery space for new media artists within our community. “Gateway” is an entry point; the term refers to network gateways, telecommunication devices that allow for the flow and translation of data between separate networks – an apt metaphor for the responsibility of organizations to provide resources and support to the artists in their community. IA Gateway was first held in 2024.
