Making Noise: Digital Audio Programming in SuperCollider
In-person at InterAccess - Register here
In this intermediate experimental workshop we will work with sound, synthesis, and code using SuperCollider, a programming language and synthesis engine for digital and algorithmic audio. SuperCollider is used for music composition, sound art, live performance, live coding, building embedded audio systems, and more.
Together we will explore the ways in which programming techniques and computational processes let us play with time, rhythm, timbre, recorded sound, and more. We will learn the fundamentals of the SuperCollider system while also digging into how digital audio works and how we can use common (and not-so-common) approaches to programming sound and music.
To get the most from this workshop some familiarity with the basic concepts of programming is recommended. No previous experience with SuperCollider is required.
Participants should bring:
- Laptop
- Headphones
- SuperCollider (Install the latest release for your operating system; available for MacOS, Windows and Linux)

About the Facilitator
Matt Nish-Lapidus is an artist and musician based in Tkaronto/Toronto. Matt’s varied practice probes the myth that computers should be useful rather than beautiful through examining contemporary technoculture, its histories, and its impacts on society, people, and his own life. His work results in diverse outputs including publications, recordings, installations, performances, software, and objects. Matt has performed and exhibited locally and internationally including MOCA (Toronto), The Power Plant (Toronto), INDEX Biennial (Braga), ACUD Macht Neu (Berlin), Electric Eclectics (Meaford), InterAccess (Toronto), ZKM (Karlsruhe), and more including many DIY community spaces. He holds a H.BFA in New Media from Toronto Metropolitan University and a Master of Visual Studies in Studio Art from The University of Toronto.
