Mapping for Open-source Investigation

Online via Zoom - Register Here!

Through this online workshop, instructor Sydney Hart will share examples of relevant artwork and creative media projects, while outlining potentials of the burgeoning field of open-source investigation. Following this introduction to the field, Hart will turn towards specific online tools, suggesting paths for research that anyone with open web access, curiosity, and a bit of time can follow. Drawing from resources compiled by organizations such as Tactical Tech and Bellingcat, Hart will share websites for tracking flights (OpenSky Network) and maritime traffic (Marine Traffic), and will outline how satellite imagery can help visualize the environmental impacts of natural resource extraction (Sentinel Hub).

Through this workshop, participants will produce a flow map and a collection of related satellite images, while learning about resources, techniques, and methods for starting their own open-source investigations.
