Intro to 3D Printing for Artists

This introductory course will acquaint artists with the 3D Printing process and will consider some unconventional creative uses for 3D Printing. By using a mixture of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on learning approaches, participants will translate their ideas or existing objects into digital 3D models, 3D prints or new-media art. In the first 3-hour workshop, participants will learn how to prepare files and operate the 3D printer; in the second workshop participants will be encouraged to explore applications for 3D printing technologies for their own work, building upon the prior lesson. The course will provide participants with resources to find and create models, in addition to covering the use of slicing software (Slic3r and Cura), simple 3D printer maintenance and operating skills, and starting points to build, modify, and hack 3D printers. Participants are encouraged to bring their own computers in order to download software and resource material, and to consider project ideas they would like to explore in the second part of the course.

About the instructor: Andre Markovic is a Toronto-based maker and 3D fabrication enthusiast. He received an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Art and Art History from the University of Toronto and Sheridan College in 2013. It was there that he was first exposed to 3D printing technology in the form of a first generation RepRap Mendel. Markovic’s ongoing explorations into industrial design and electronics led him to become more dedicated to 3D printing over the past year, during which he built his own 3D printer one piece at a time. He has been printing every day since then, and regularly watches others print and build their own 3D printers on YouTube… He is completely fascinated by 3D printers, to put it mildly.
