DIY Vacuum Form Lamps

Join artist Audrey Ammann in this hands-on workshop that will guide participants through the basics of vacuum forming to design their own LED lamp covers.
Vacuum forming is one of the simplest thermoforming techniques that allows artists to produce quick and consistent mold formations. A vacuum former uses the process of heating a plastic sheet until soft, placing it on a mold, and applying suction force to shape the plastic to the desired shape.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will design, create and assemble a DIY vacuum-formed lamp cover. Participants will get a brief introduction to the vacuum former, learn some basics of product design and considerations for making molds, as well as some creative approaches to play with the process!
Materials Provided:
- Plastic sheets for the vacuum former (opaque white)
- A small lamp cord
Participants should bring an object they want to vacuum form, based on the following considerations:
- No greater than 10”x14” in length/width
- Made of approved materials: wood, MDF, metal, resin, ceramics, fired polymer clay, fiberglass, Plaster of Paris (if unsure, please email to confirm)
- Simple shapes work best: no undercuts, shallow (not tall/thin), rounded corners preferred. Consider that you'll want something that can accommodate a light bulb!

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Audrey Ammann is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist from the United States and recent graduate from the University of Toronto Visual Studies undergraduate program. Her extensive background in costume and haunted house design acts as a thematic and aesthetic foundation for her practice. Through assemblies of video, sound, augmented reality, performance, installation and research, she uncovers, reenacts, and reimagines digital legends and personal memories that sit on the edge of obscurity. Audrey Ammann is a 2023 InterAccess Media Arts Prize finalist.
ABOUT THE MEDIA ARTS PRIZE
For over twenty years the InterAccess Media Arts Prize has been granted annually to a graduating student whose work exhibits excellence and innovation in new media practice. Participating colleges and universities are invited to nominate one graduating student to be considered for a solo exhibition in InterAccess's gallery. Nominations are adjudicated by InterAccess's Programming Committee, who select one nominee for an exhibition at InterAccess. All nominees receive a complimentary one-year studio membership to InterAccess.
