The Future: Before - Spring 2018 Programming Launch
On the occasion of InterAccess’s 35th anniversary we are celebrating the past and future of new media art practice. Join us this spring for The Future: Before at InterAccess’s new facility at 950 Dupont St. for a season of programming that showcases a history of cutting edge practice within Canada’s media arts community, and its influence on the current digital landscape.
Through the presentation and contemporary contextualization of pioneering interactive artworks by Nancy Paterson, the exploration of living art practices that utilize obsolete technologies, and a dip into InterAccess’s archives, we will highlight the contribution that InterAccess and Toronto’s artists have made to the field of new media and experimental practice over the past three and a half decades.
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
1) Artworks by pioneering Canadian media artist Nancy Paterson that have never been exhibited in Toronto will be on view from April 4th – May 26th, 2018. Paterson’s career has spanned 30 years and her influence in the fields of new media art and cyberfeminism have been felt nationally and internationally. Two of her most widely known works, Bicycle TV (1989) and The Machine In The Garden (1993), will be presented in this retrospective exhibition curated by Shauna Jean Doherty.
2) The Obsolesced workshop and event series highlights living art practices with obsolete technologies, seeking and celebrating the contemporary creative possibilities in once-futuristic tools. Artist Tasman Richardson will present a two-day workshop (May 8th and 15th, 2018) on developing abstract expressions with various analogue glitches. On May 9th, artist Nicholas Fox-Gieg will present the story of NAPLPS, an early Canadian graphics language, along with a selection of early art made using the format. Later that week, researcher John Durno will present a lecture about his digital archaeology and conservation work uncovering and restoring Telidon art from the 1980’s.
3) In the series Revisiting The Electronic Avant-Garde, media artists, curators, and critics who were central to the establishment of Toronto as a hub for electronic arts will reunite through a series of short presentations in an event titled, The Basement Tapes: Media Arts Reunion. On April 28th join Doug Back, David Rokeby, Nell Tenhaaf, Ihor Holubizky, Tanya Mars, and Nancy Paterson to hear about media art projects and exhibitions from the 1980’s. Additionally, follow along on InterAccess’s Instagram (@InterAccessTO) to see archive images of Telidon graphics created by some of InterAccess’s earliest members in the social media series titled #telidon.
