Sensing Installations: Interfacing Processing with Arduino

Learn how to create coded animations and video effects that respond to their environments using two ubiquitous and open source coding tools: Processing and Arduino. Tess Sutherland will demonstrate the powerful capabilities of interfacing Arduino and Processing in a variety of examples of interactive art. By the end of the session students will use inputs and outputs to create tangible interactivity in their projects, and leave this workshop with the ability to create a tangible output from their code as well as use real-world inputs to drive their work.

Sonic Geography

Session 1 will teach the basics of drawing with code. Session 2 will show how to animate code through parameterization, and how to interface the mouse and keyboard with your creations. In both sessions, Tess will show examples of a wide range of artworks made with Processing and identify further resources for students.

Intro to Electronics for Artists (Series)

Learning the basics of electronics is vital for anyone looking to create interactive or new media work. This workshop, geared to artists, is for those new in electronics, or for those who need a refresher. You will learn the basics of electricity starting with Ohm’s Law and work your way up to building simple digital circuits with CMOS chips, transistors and LEDs. You will learn how to interface these circuits with motors, sensors and other devices.

Solution Culture: Hydroponics for Creative Practice

Emerging artist and environmental steward Paul Chartrand will lead participants through an introductory course to hydroponics and creating customized soil-less gardening systems for artistic and expressive applications. Using recycled materials, each participant will be guided through the construction of a simple mechanism that can both aerate and pump water to plants. Participants will also be introduced to essential supplies and local suppliers for building on knowledge acquired in the workshop and completing a hydroponic system on a larger scale.
